If you are on a road trip on I-35 between Austin and DFW and you don’t stop in the little Czech town of West, Texas for kolaches, then you did not road trip.
Czech Stop is located in a Shell Station 15 miles North of Waco and about 75 miles South of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. It is right on the highway, so it is not hard to find.
Name just about any fruit and they probably make it in kolache form.
My favorite is the Chocolate and Cream Cheese Kolache. It is so damn good. Once I was traveling I-35 southbound with my friend Kathy and I was so wrapped up in indulging this delicacy, not only could I not talk, apparently I could not hear either. She had to repeat the whole story.
If savory is your thing, there are Pepperoni, Sausage & Jalapeno, Ham & Cheese, Roast Beef, Sausage and Kraut and many other puffs you should try.
Sweet and savory bread is made in the bakery. The Jalapeno and Cheese Bread is so soft you could use it as a pillow if you needed to nap in the car.
Pickled Eggs and Pickled Pigs Feet are for sale on the counter should you get a craving for them. I never will, so I can not Yay or Nay either for a recommendation. Sorry.
Open 24 hours a day, be prepared for a wait no matter what time you go.
