I am a sucker for good marketing. With a cool name and you throw in an animal, I am pretty much there with bells on.
In the East Village, Big Gay Ice Cream Shop opened in September 2011.
I was strolling through The West Village and decided I was long overdue a place like this – catchy name, ice cream, AND a unicorn wearing Dorothy of the Golden Girls on a cameo necklace. You bet your sweet ass I was going in.
Big Gay Ice Cream makes you experience the old school ice cream parlor by mixing high-quality ingredients. Many a guilty pleasure you can choose. Traditional flavors are combined with a bit of the unexpected. This is for kids at heart of all ages.
Soft serve is the name of the game here, and sprinkles are free.
Did you read that?
I SAID FREE SPRINKLES!
In June 2012, Dessert Professional featured Big Gay Ice Cream in their 10 best ice cream parlors in the U.S. issue. Then in May 2013, The Daily Beast and USA Today ranked Big Gay Ice Cream as the #5 best ice cream parlor in the world – the highest ranked U.S. ice cream parlor on the list.
Bonus: You get to learn what to do in case someone is choking taught by my favorite Golden Girl and a unicorn.
With several locations, pints being sold up and down the East coast, and a book Big Gay Ice Cream: Saucy Stories & Frozen Treats: Going All the Way with Ice Cream, success tastes sweet for founders Doug Quint and Bryan Petroff.
